How Do Ratings Work?

Academic Chess Ratings provide an exciting way to track chess progress. At our tournaments (see Tournaments) our participants establish a rating by winning or losing games. Winning games increases a rating, while losing decreases it. Winning against a higher rated player also increases the winner's rating more than winning against a lower rated player. Same goes for losing. It is based on the following mathematical formula (very similar to the same formula used by the United States Chess Federation):
